Event Ad

Description: A full bleed color Event Ad to promote awareness for the 2014 Avalanche on Mt. Everest by using only a scanner and Microsoft Word.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): First I scanned the image. Then I uploaded the image into Microsoft Word, changed the sizing and fit the image to the draft. I then sized and resized so that I could place the man in the image off to the right hand side. I added text boxes, found fonts that I liked for the message if the Ad. I used alignment and contrasting fonts to refine my design.

Message: I wanted to raise awareness about the devastating avalanche in Nepal and the Sherpa’s. This Ad is designed to fit in anywhere; on a bulletin board, telephone pole, newspaper, classroom, email or as a handout or “pass-a-long”.

Audience:  Anyone in the Boise community who wants to broaden their cultural experience, NGO’s, Non-Profits or anyone looking to support a great cause.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, red, yellow and green.

Top Thing Learned: The most important thing I learned through the course of the project is how useable Microsoft Word is. It’s amazing all the hidden design features. It was very useful to learn how to scan properly.

Title Font Name & Category: Didot Bold- Modern

Copy Font Name & Category: Helvetica Light Bold- Sans Serif

Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: I found this image from the November 2014 National Geographic issue. The actual image is located on page 82 and is a 4.5″ x 6.5″. I scanned the image at the China Horizon’s office located on College Avenue, Rexburg Idaho.

  1. Melissa I super love your ad! I think you did an awesome job! What I admire most, is that you talked about your effort to size and re-size to really get the image to work. Props on making sure that you put in all that work to get what you wanted! Your composition is awesome and the whole design has a really good feel. I like the placement of the text on the bottom to help draw my eye around the page. Good work!

  2. Your image is super! I love how unique this event is.
You had the necessary information in your text, and it was easy to read. I like the left alignment, I think that the bottom of the text could be aligned with the bottom of the hikers shoe. Your font is a little dull. The photo is so captivating, but the font, although easy to read, doesn’t help your design. This may have been a good time to use a cool decorative font for your heading. The body copy is great, but the heading doesn’t speak how cool of an event this is.
